The above table is based on the Overall Users’ Satisfaction Rating, functionality, reliability and value
for money these are our 3 best buys across the price points:
Our first
best buy is the Morphy Richards
42244 (its replacement the Morphy Richards 42234 has also
earned plaudits from owners, but not in great enough numbers to be included in this year’s survey
results).
Part of the
42244’s appeal is its competitive price – around £100 or less.
This
pressurised steam iron produces a constant 100g/min of steam. Now, that performance may not be up there with the
likes of the Philips GC9230 (120g/min constant + steam boost to 240g/min) but its way better than a conventional steam
iron.
One minor
draw-back is that this model uses a special anti-calc filter. This takes the form of a bag you pop in the filter
compartment. You get two of these in the box. Eventually these need replacing at around £8 for
5.
The
Philips GC7420 has
both a similar price tag and performance. However, there are no anti-calc filters to cost into your
budget.
Add to that Philips reputation for reliability and you have a household appliance
that can help you cut through the ironing chore.
Overall, our Best Buy recommendation would be the Philips GC9230. This offers
120g/min continuous steam boosted to 240g/min on demand. That means the GC9230 can either deal with the family
ironing or provide an effective tool in professional ironing service.
We were a bit sceptical about Philips claims for the optimal temperature control, but GC9230 owners assure
us it works well. The 1.5L water tank provides enough steam for around 50 minutes ironing.
