User nominated recommendations

Edwin Jagger DE89BL Safety Razor (9.61/10) – Recommendation 1

Edwin-Jagger-DE89BL DE Safety RazorAccording to its users the Edwin Jagger DE89BL Safety Razor (user rating 9.61/10) is the pre-eminent gentleman’s shaving tool.

This classic, double-edge safety razor has a weighty, finely milled handle. The handle offsets the shave head delivering balance and therefore a precision shave that’s nick free.

We can’t help thinking that the Jagger DE89BL’s near perfect user rating derives as much from the pleasure of a lathered-up wet shave, as it does from the precision of the razor itself. It’s also cheaper than its Merkur rival.

The Edwin Jagger Chatsworth Mach 3 razor was also highly commended by owners and users.

Gillette Mach3 Manual (9.50/10) – Recommendation 2

Gillette Mach3 Manual Cartridge wet razorAt number two we have the humble Gillette Mach3 cartridge razor – owner rating 9.50/10.

The Mach 3 has 3 in-line blades and that’s probably the secret of its users’ satisfaction. The 3 razor blade in a pivoting head quickly deliver a painless shave and smooth skin without annoying clogging.

That’s why the Gillette Mach3 appeals to both busy commuters and women seeking smooth legs.

Merkur of Solingen Futur Safety Razor (9.38/10) – User Recommendation 3

Merkur of Solingen Futur DE Safety RazorThe Merkur Futur DE Safety Razor has an overall user’s rating of 9.38/10.

Here’s another precision-made men’s grooming tool. As the name implies the Futur brings the traditional double edge safety razor into the twenty-first century.

Devotees of gentlemen’s wet shaving will appreciate the balance of this grooming aid and the fact you can precisely adjust the “bite” of the razor. That means you can achieve the kind of shave you prefer and/or compensate as a blade loses its hone.

Guide to Our Compare Safety Razor 2013 UK Table

Overall Users Satisfaction Rating
The key question we asked in our user survey was this: “You’ve been using your safety razor now for six or more weeks.

Within our shaving survey of more than 2,300 men (and women) we found 730 who used a wet razor as their main or secondary tool for removing unwanted hair or daily grooming.

Given your experience to date, how would you rate your shaving overall on a scale of 1 (low) to 10 (high)? Think about ease of use, reliability and value for money”.

We then took all these ratings for a given model and found an Overall Users Satisfaction Rating per model.

Your best buy safety razor will have a score of 8 or more. A score of 7 suggests a good design marred by poor reliability. A score of less than 7 suggests a product has both design and reliability faults. It’s a waste of your money.

Wet Shave
All these wet razors work best after softening the skin with a warm water bathe. Despite the lubrication strip on some models, you’ll also want to use shaving gel, foam or cream.

Balanced
The double edge safety razor models are balanced to ease the shaving experience and deliver a precision shave.

The cartridge razors, like the Gillette Mach 3, are light in weight and obtain precision from a swivelling head to follow the contours on areas like the jawline (or round the ankles if you are a lady shaving).

Ergonomic handle
Most razors in the top ten have milling grooves on the handles to prevent slipping while in use.

Adjustable
Some wet razors are adjustable so you can refine the rake of the blades for a close, comfortable shave.

Head pivots
A handy feature if you are a woman removing unwanted hair from your legs or a chap shaving those facial knobbly bits.

A pivoting head will more readily keep in contact with the skin on areas like under the jawline, around knees and ankles.

Double edge safety
The classic DE safety razor has a head set at right angles to the handle. You screw the handle to open a butterfly clasp into which you pop the double edge razor blade.

There a precision bar set in front of the slightly protruding razor’s edge. This both stretches the skin and ensures the correct, safe angle for the blade to shave.

The Merkur Futur, for example allows the user to safely adjust the tolerance of the shave.

2 in-line blades
3 in-line blades
4 in-line blades
5 in-line blades

A cartridge wet razor mounts between 2 and 5 blades. The idea being that the second or subsequent blades will catch missed hairs or those that rebound from the first blade. That means you get a quicker, closer and painless shave.

However, beware the more blades you have, the more likely the razor will clog.

Edge trimmer
An edge trimmer is usually only found on more expensive grooming tools like beard trimmers and electric shavers.

Now there’s a trend to sticking an AAA battery in the handle of a cartridge wet razor to power a mini trimmer for side-burns or perhaps a moustache or goatee.

Lubricating strip
The humble lubricating strip is probably, one of the best innovations in cartridge safety razors. The idea is to smooth the razor’s path across your skin. It doesn’t replace the need to wet the face with water and/or shave foam but it does contribute toward a painless shave.

Skin smooth strip
The skin smooth strip is akin to the safety bar/stretcher on a double edge wet razor. The idea is to gently stretch the skin making the hairs stand out proud and easing the path of the razor.

Blade coating
Blade coatings are designed to give a razor’s blade longevity and/or smooth its passing over the skin.

Pulsing vibration
A pulsing vibration is said to help hair to stand out proud for a close shave and/or reduce skin irritation.

Anti-clogging vents
Anti-clogging vents are most often found on multi-bladed cartridge safety razors. They are intended to help water circulate through the razor head to prevent annoying clogging.

Shaving paraphernalia
Some razor sets are provided with everything you need to undertake a wet shave. Things like a badger shaving cream brush, shaving balm and the like. Seasoned wet shavers usually prefer to assemble their own grooming paraphernalia.

Replacement blades
Cartridge
DE Safety blades

You’ll easily source both new cartridge razor heads and DE safety blades on the high street or online.

AAA battery
A few premium razors now come with an AAA battery to power a hair trimmer and deliver a pleasing vibration.
