At Best Buys for we publish consumer reports based on surveying owners who have used their power toothbrush for at least 6 or more weeks.

That’s long enough to get over the sleek lines of the light weight brush and determine if the expense of an electric toothbrush really does deliver better teeth cleaning and fitter gums.

First, find the electric toothbrush that interests you:

The top, user-rated brushes are on the left beginning with the Oral-B 9500.

Then you can look down the columns to locate the functions you need in a rechargeable toothbrush.

We reckon you want to quickly target the best power brushes – so we feature here only the top electric toothbrushes.

Notes on Features & Functions Column

Here are a few clarifications for the compare electric toothbrushes table:

Overall Users’ Satisfaction Rating
To date we’ve surveyed over 4500 users of power toothbrushes in order to find out which are the best models in the UK and why.

One question we asked was: “You’ve lived with your toothbrush now for 6 or more weeks. Thinking about how much you paid and your experience to date, how would you rate your brush overall out of 10?

We combined all marks for a given model to find the overall users’ rating. 8 or more suggests a rechargeable brush that delivers good teeth cleaning results is reliable and represents good value for money.

A rating of 7 or less suggests a model has shortcomings in performance or reliability and has been judged – by users – to be poor value for money.

Suitable for Kids Aged 7+
As children lose their milk teeth an electric toothbrush becomes a practical proposition. To begin with either a less powerful brush, e.g. Oral-B 400 Advance Power (9.19/10).

Or, a toothbrush offering a sensitive mode, like the Oral-B 3000 (8.90/10).

Or, perhaps, a toothbrush to which a sensitive formulation brush head can be fitted, i.e. any of the Oral-B range.

The Philips Sonicare HX6311/02 (8.95/10) Kids rechargeable sonic toothbrush has specially formulated heads that can suit children as young as 4.

Teeth Cleaning Action
There are two kinds of teeth cleaning action: sonic and rotating oscillation. Either mechanism operates on the brush head to creating hundreds of small side to side movements. As you move the brush over your teeth this micro-movement scrubs the surface free of the clinging bacterial plaque that causes tooth decay.

Vibrations, Rotations and Pulses
In theory, the more powerful the brush the better it cleans. However, an effective teeth clean depends on the diligence of you the user brushing thoroughly – which will probably take two minutes.

Battery Recharge Time
The battery recharge time varies from around 4-8 hours. More expensive brushes have better batteries and can re-charge in a short time. If you are buying a cheaper brush, look for one with a low charge warning light.

The Oral-B 400 Advance Power (9.19/10) doesn’t use rechargeable batteries – just 2xAA batteries.

Teeth Brushing Modes
Generally the more modes a brush has the more it costs.

Daily clean gives you the ability to achieve that golden two minutes of teeth brushing twice a day.

Sensitive mode is for people with dodgy teeth. It’s a little less vigorous than daily clean mode. You can even get softer, sensitive Oral-B tooth brush heads.

Teeth polish lets you emulate the dental hygienist (you may have to invest in the right kind of toothpaste and follow the instructions).

Deep cleanse. Users were not really sure what this means. It sounds like an excuse for another “mode” and hike in price.

Gum massage. Some users wax lyrical about the soothing or invigorating benefits of gum massage. If you have a single mode brush offering a daily clean and you run it along the gum-line surely you are massaging the gums while cleaning?

Safe on Dental Braces, Bridges or Implants
Used with care and attention a power toothbrush won’t harm dental implants. You may need to invest in a shaving mirror so you can see what you are cleaning. If you have any doubts seek advice from your dentist or hygienist.

Naturally Whiten Teeth
You can also use an electric toothbrush to naturally brighten or whiten your teeth. Again you may need the right toothpaste and have to avoid the teeth staining tannins found in tea, coffee, red wine, etc.

Pressure Sensor
Many brushes have this feature to prevent over enthusiastic teeth brushing. It causes the brush motor to stutter.

Teeth Brushing Timer
This is a very useful feature. Some people think that an electric toothbrush means quicker teeth brushing. It doesn’t, a rechargeable toothbrush means more thorough teeth cleaning.

Most electric toothbrushes have a stutter timer. This briefly interrupts the brush motor every 30 seconds. The idea being for you to concentrate on the four quadrants of your mouth for 30 seconds in order to achieve that golden two minute teeth clean and gum massage.

Takes Interchangeable Brush Heads
A power toothbrush handle will generally last for years. Brush heads last for around 6 months, depending on use.

Both Oral-B and Philips Sonicare have a range of brush heads. So, you can replace like for like or invest in some specialist brush heads, e.g. to polish your teeth.

Toothbrush Charger Stand
Travel charger

These use induction charging and have a two pin plug. So, you either need a shaver point in the bathroom or a two-pin adaptor plug for recharging in another room.
