At Best Buys for we publish reports based on surveying owners who have used their epilator for at least 12 or more weeks.

That’s long enough to get over the pretty, ergonomic lines and the first (or second) epilation and determine if the expense of an epilator really does deliver better results than a wet razor or waxing.

First, find the model that interests you:

The top, user-rated women’s grooming tools are on the left beginning with the Braun 7871 Silk-épil Wet & Dry.

Then you can look down the columns to locate the functions that you need in for full hair removal.

User Rating
To date we’ve surveyed 4890 epilator users in order to find out which are the best female grooming tools in the UK and why.

One question we asked was: “You’ve used your epilator now for 3 months or more. Thinking about how much you paid and your experience to date, how would you rate your female grooming tool overall out of 10?

We combined all marks for a given model to find the overall users satisfaction rating. 8 or more suggests an unwanted hair removal tool that delivers smooth skin, is fairly painless in operation, reliable and represents good value for money.

A rating of 7 or less suggests a model has shortcomings in performance or reliability and has been judged – by users – to be poor value for money.

Unwanted Hair Removal

All the epilators we researched will remove unwanted hair from legs, arms and the body. All the top 10 also come with a precision attachment to help you trim/shape hair before bikini line epilation.

Some models also come with a foil shaver attachment that can be used on under-arm hair (or to help shape the bikini line).

A few models also have precision attachments that help you target unwanted facial hair.

Plucks hair as short as

All the top 10 models compared here are the tweezers or disc type epilators. The rotating battery of tweezers can pluck hairs as short as half a millimetre.

Promises skin smoothness for as long as 28 days

All manufacturers make claims they can deliver smooth legs for around 4 weeks. Clearly the length of time depends less on the efficiency of the epilator than on the texture of your body hair. You may need to epilate more than once a month for personally acceptable results.

Reasonably painless hair removal

Epilators work by plucking out hair by the root. Some people are squeamish which helps make the operation seem more painful than it needs.

Manufacturers make design tweaks to their products to help reduce perceived pain. But there is one major thing you can do to achieve fairly painless hair removal, even from problem areas like the front of ankles or round the bikini line. Here’s how:

Wet or dry operation
The main thing you can do to reduce the perceived pain of hair plucking is to epilate after bathing and not when you are in a tearing hurry.

If you are relaxed you are less likely to hurry and more likely to cleanly pluck unwanted hair. Plus your skin will be “softer”. It will be relaxed and pores, including hair pores will be open. It will be easier and less painful to pluck hair.

A wet or dry epilator gives you the option to remove hair in the bath and the added benefit of flushing waste hair down the plug-hole.

Head pivots follows contours
This feature can help you keep the grooming tool smoothly running over your skin. That means neat plucking not painful pulling.

Personalise speed
Manufacturers offer two speeds slow and fast. Which speed is right for you will depend on your experience of epilation and the texture of the hair you want to remove.

Vibrating massage
Some manufacturers claim the vibration of the epilation head massages the skin and helps deaden discomfort. Or it may simply be that the sound/pleasure of the vibration distracts from any discomfort.

Hair lift to cut
Some manufacturers e.g. Philips use skin vibration to help hair stand away from the skin. Other manufacturers incorporate hair channelling combs into their epilation heads. Either way the idea is put more hair in the path of the hair removal tool so you can remove hair efficiently and quickly.

Ice glove
Olay cooling wipes

The ice glove or more precisely cooling glove is designed to temporarily anesthetise the skin immediately before you pass the epilator over the spot.

Epilator Attachments

All the top hair removal tools come with clip on heads that go over the disc of spinning tweezers.

Beginners cap
Gentle cap (Sensitive)

These attachments are designed for newcomers to epilation or people who want to treat a sensitive are like the bikini line.

Precision Sensitive area cap
Intended for the bikini line this attachment lets you shape or treat a precise area.

Leg Smoothing cap
The Braun 7871 Silk-épil incorporates a Gillette razor blade behind the epilation head. This shaves very fine or very short hair delivering – according to users – a silky smooth finish.

You can buy replacement Braun 781 smoothing caps.

Foil Shaver/trimmer head
A foil razor that can shave hair at the Bikini line or under arms. Acceptable results will depend on the length and texture of your hair.

Efficiency cap
Let’s you make use of the full width of the epilation head. Also incorporates a hair comb to channel flat lying hair up into the epilator.

Some Philips models have a wider epilation head – so you can remove unwanted hair more quickly.

Unwanted facial hair cap
A clip-on head to provide precise facial epilation.

Useful Epiliation Tools

Built in contrast light
This light casts the shadow of pesky, hard to see hairs. Helps you achieve silky smooth skin results.

Cordless
No cord means you can epilate wherever convenient. It also means you can pluck in the bath or shower, washing unwanted hair away.

Exfoliation brush
Removes spent skin cells to deliver silky smooth legs.

Pedicure file
So you can remove hard skin from feet before/after epilating.

Luxury manual tweezers
This one has a light so you can pluck individual hairs from your face or eyebrows.

Embedded micro-conditioners
Remington claims these micro-conditioners (embedded in the epilation head) help lubricate the hair removal process and will last as long as the hair removal tool.

Technical details

Number of hair tweezers
It’s not the number of hair tweezers that’s important but how well they do the job. See the overall users’ satisfaction rating – it’s a more reliable guide to effectiveness.

Tweezer Disk type
All the top epilators are of the tweezer disc type. A spinning disc holds a battery of tweezers. There are also coil, spring or threading type epilators. These are manual not powered and intended for unwanted facial hair.

Compare Braun Epilators

From our research we can say that when you compare Braun epilators the Braun 7871 Silk-épil Wet & Dry and Braun 7681 Silk-épil Xpressive Pro come out tops with users.

Compare Philips Epilators

When you compare Philips epilators you can see their highest rated model the Philips HP6520 SatinSoft is in fourth place. These female grooming tools are certainly reliable, but it’s the lack of wet/dry operation that lets them down.
