Using our 7” Tablet PC Comparison Table

Our 7” Tablet PC Comparison table helps you pinpoint the handheld computer best suited to your needs and budget. A model comparison lets you compare and contrast one tablet against another across the current top models available in Britain today.

Whose top models? The answer: an owners’ top rated list.

At Best Buys Compared we publish reports based on surveying owners who have used their handheld PC for at least 6 or more weeks.

That’s long enough to get over the light weight, the thrill of an easy to use capacitive, touch screen and download a few handy or entertaining apps. After six weeks you can determine if a handheld PC really does deliver a better mobile computing experience than a clunky old laptop.

First, find the 7” tablet PC that interests you:

The top, user-rated irons are on the left beginning with the Apple iPad Mini.

Then you can look down the rows to locate the functions that you need in a handheld computer.

Sorry, we reckon you want to quickly home in on the best tablets – so we only feature here the highest user-rated tablet PCs.

Notes on Features & Functions Column

Here are a few clarifications for this 7” tablet PC comparison table:

Overall Users’ Satisfaction Rating
To date we’ve surveyed just over 6,211 users of 7 inch tablets in order to find out which are the best models in the UK and why.

The key survey question we asked was: “You’ve lived with your tablet now for 6 or more weeks. Thinking about how much you paid and your experience to date, how would you rate your device overall out of 10?

We combined all marks for a given model to find the overall users’ satisfaction rating. 8 or 9 (or more) suggests a 7” tablet that delivers a great user experience, is reliable and represents good value for money.

A rating of 7 or less suggests a model has shortcomings in performance or reliability and has been judged – by users – to be poor value for money.

Separate physical keyboard
All these devices have an on-screen touch keyboard. If you need a physical keyboard these are available as accessories. Connection is usually made wirelessly via Bluetooth.

Internet connectivity
All the tablets in the table – almost seamlessly - connect to the internet and Apps stores via Wi-Fi___33 rather than cable. So you need either a wireless source/router at home or access to a public Wi-Fi hotspot.

3G or 4G connectivity
You can buy the same device with (currently) 3G, but soon to 4G capability. That means you can surf the web anywhere you can pick up a mobile signal. This doesn’t make the PC into a mobile phone.

Reads document types
You can open and read a wide variety of file types – either as attachments in email, as eBooks or as documents sourced from the web, eg PDF. For a complete list by tablet PC see our handy guide to file types read by 7 inch tablet PCs here…>>>

Plays social, hobby & productivity apps
Most tablets come with a few on-board software or “Apps” – things like a web-browser & calendar. There are thousands of Apps in Apple’s App Store. Android-based tablets have access to Google’s App store and other third-party stores. You can find and download/install all sorts of apps from astronomy to games to security defences for your tablet.

Plays movies
Using services like NetFlix or LoveFilm you can download & watch films. You can also transfer movie files from your PC to tablet.

We’ve a complete list of the file types read by the best tablet PCs , eg .MOV or FLV.

Takes/displays photos
Plays/makes home video (back camera)
A 5 mega pixel (or better) camera mounted on the back of most of these devices will enable you to shoot good quality still photographs (light permitting). You can also make HD video clips.

You can open and view file types: BMP, GIF, JPEG & PNG

Front Camera/Webcam
Skype enabling App?
A low quality (usually 1-2mp) front facing camera acts as a webcam. Download the Skype App and you can video chat with other Skype enabled devices.

3.5mm stereo ear jack
Plays music & audio
You can connect headphones to a tablet with a 3.5mm jack point. Then download music, podcasts and other audio, either from an app store or other sources on the net. Using an Android-based tablet doesn’t prevent you from using the Apple iTunes store.

We’ve a complete list of audio file types that play on a tablet PCs .

MicroSD external memory slot
Amazon, Apple and Google sell tablets with fixed memory storage. Acer and Samsung provide a microSD card slot so you can, inexpensively, expand memory storage up to 32GB.

micro USB out port
micro hdmi out port
The micro USB socket to standard USB connector is the cable way to connect your tablet to a Laptop or desktop PC. This is both to recharge the tablet (if you haven’t got a recharger unit) and to transfer files to/from the tablet.

Acer, offer a micro hdmi port. That means, for example, you could use the tablet to play a NetFlix movie displayed on a big TV screen.

Apple Lightning connector
The Apple Lightning Connector is a proprietary recharger/USB connector for the Apple iPad Mini.

Memory
A tablet PC’s memory store in gigabytes.

Battery endurance
This is a guide only. Battery endurance really depends on the use to which you put your Tablet PC. If you are reading ebooks or listening to music the endurance could be astounding, but watch a couple of HD movies back to back and you may find yourself in need of a recharge.

Microphone
All the top tablets have a front facing, basic microphone. This is good for Skype chat or recording a reasonable sound track to a video clip.

Stereo speakers
Volume control
These devices have stereo speakers, but look how thin the case is. Speakers are miniscule and output is tinny. You are better off with earphones or iPod speakers connected via the 3.5mm jack point.

CPU speed
Operating RAM
CPU speed is an indication of how many computations and how fast they are calculated. Most tablets currently offer 1.5 to 2.0Ghz so are, crudely, almost “as fast as” many laptop and desktop computers. What that means to you is the ability to launch an app quickly and have it deliver an experience that doesn’t “stutter” or freeze.

Operating RAM is the space available for computer programs to run. Again most tablets offer 2 GB of RAM, similar to clunky laptops and static desktops. That gives you the ability to run graphic heavy apps – like movies - without stutter.

The exception is the Apple iPad mini. However, Apple Apps don’t go in the store unless they work seamlessly with the iPad mini’s operating system and available resources.

App Services
There’s no point in having a tablet computer if you can’t do with it what you want. There’s a software app for almost any entertainment, hobby, life-challenge or enquiry you can think of. Many are free to download and use, some have to be paid for.

You’ll find apps for the Apple iPad mini in the Apple App Store (and music in iTunes).

For Android devices there’s Google’s App store (where you’ll also find an iTunes app).

The Amazon Kindle Fire HD offers you apps through the Amazon App store. As the Kindle Fire HD is Android based a bit of fiddling with its settings will give you access to Google’s App store.

In both the Apple and Google App stores there’s a Kindle App, so you can Kindlise your Android or Apple 7” tablet PC.

Recharger
Recharge via PC or laptop
It’s worth noting that all these PC tablets recharge through another computer via a micro USB to standard USB connector cable. Slowly: It takes around 10-15 hours.

For a faster 3-4 hour recharge you need a recharger unit. All the models here are supplied with a recharger in the box, except the Amazon Kindle Fire HD. You’ll have to buy a Kindle charger for around £12.
