A 7 inch handheld computer is highly portable (about the size and weight of a paperback book). You can hold it comfortably in one hand. It connects – painlessly - to the internet via Wi-Fi (and/or 3G mobile). And it only takes a short time to master the touchscreen controls.

Rather than complicated software a mobile PC runs “Apps” – a program that does one thing well – like display a movie. A mobile computer is almost as powerful as a heavy laptop but costs a lot less.

10 Things You Should Look for in a 7 Inch Tablet PC

Best Buys Compared has run a consumer survey among over six thousand 7 inch tablet PC owners in the UK and America. This user poll revealed 10 key attributes users know deliver a frustration free experience of media computing on the go:

*You’ll need a subscription to a Wi-Fi broadband super hub at home, or access to a public “hotspot” wireless network.

The Best Buy 7” Tablet PC Survey revealed which models have these useful characteristics and benefits.

Here’s why these handheld PC qualities will matter to you:

Be about the size of a thin paperback book and as light
A 7 inch PC is mobile. It fits in your hand like a book and is lightweight, too. It delivers twice the screen of a smartphone.

Easily connect to a Wi-Fi wireless network*
Handheld computers have been made practicable by the Wi-Fi revolution. These devices are designed to connect painlessly to an available wireless network.

In our survey most users had Wi-Fi models; a few – often using their tablet for business - had the more expensive Wi-Fi and 3G (soon to be 4G) models that will also connect to a subscription mobile phone network.

Wireless means you can use your tablet PC anywhere in the house, in your garden and on the move.

*To go Wi-Fi, you’ll need a broadcasting, broadband super hub like those provided by BT, Virgin, Sky, TalkTalk and other providers, or, access to a public “hotspot” wireless network.

Has an easy to learn touchscreen interface
A handheld PC has no separate keyboard (there will be an onscreen one). You control your tablet through a capacitive touchscreen, using gentle taps or sweeps of your finger to find, launch and control Aps.

(If you really want you can buy a separate physical keyboard that connects wirelessly through the Bluetooth function).

Offer a front webcam and rear camera/video camera
With a webcam and the Skype app you can make video conference calls.

A rear facing camera lets you take photos (light permitting) or film video clips. Unlike a 10” tablet, a 7 inch Slate PC can easily be held in one hand like a smartphone. There are apps to edit photos & video and upload them to YouTube, Facebook and Picasa.

Play music, movies & games
Plug a pair of earphones in the 3.5mm jack point and you have a mobile PC that plays music like an iPod. These mini-computers will also play MP4 and .MOV video so you can watch movies on the go. And of course there are many video game apps to choose from.

Displays eBooks & documents
You can adjust the brightness of these little computers and alter font sizes making them double as eReaders. You can open and read all kinds of documents files including PDF. There’s even an Amazon Kindle app.

Access a wide range of utility & entertainment software Apps
Apps are computer programs that do one thing well. They are designed to be easy to use and take up little space on your tablet.

Apple has the Apple App store. Samsung and the Nexus 7.2 have access to the Google App store.

Examples include web browsers (usually pre-installed), a YouTube player app, a Kindle eBook app, an iTunes app and the VLC media player that copes with all kinds of movie file types.

There are literally thousands of apps to choose from. They range in price from the free, the inexpensive (c50p) to more pricey (c£5) to business apps costing hundreds of pounds.

Deliver value for money in the range £150-£250
Top of our user survey is the premium performing Apple iPad mini (9.24/10) at around £250 for the 16GB model.

Good news is you can acquire similar performance for £50-£100 less from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 (8.97/10) or the Google Nexus 7-2 (8.91/10).
